Orthognathic Surgery

This is also known as corrective jaw surgery, and is used for cases where the teeth do not meet correctly due to a discrepancy in the jaw positioning.

Jaw growth is a gradual process and in some instances, the upper and lower jaw grow at different rates. This may also apply to patients with facial deformity or developmental conditions such as cleft lip and palate. The result can be a range of problems that affect chewing function, speech, oral health and facial appearance.

A combined treatment approach is needed where an Orthodontist will straighten the teeth and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon will reposition the jaws. This will not only correct the teeth into alignment and function, but it will also improve overall facial harmony and aesthetics.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is also gaining more recognition as an important condition contributing to poor quality sleep, poor concentration, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and a range of other health related problems. Orthognathic surgery to advance the upper and lower jaw is a useful consideration for cases where non-surgical treatments are inadequate.

We use the latest computer aided techniques such as Virtual Surgical Planning which uses computer software and 3D-modelling techniques to deliver complete accuracy in treatment planning, and ultimately improved outcomes and patient satisfaction.
