General Anaesthetic
General anaesthesia is safe, reliable and an effective means of providing surgical care in a private hospital setting.
A general anaesthetic (GA) involves using medicine to render the patient temporarily unconscious (asleep), so that they will not experience anything during the surgical procedure. It is normally performed in a hospital facility and requires a specialist anaesthetist who will put the patient to sleep and wake them up at the appropriate time.
General anaesthetics are usually reserved for patients who may be extremely anxious, or a difficult surgical case, or where conventional intravenous sedation may not be appropriate, for example, very young patients.
Ti Rakau OMS uses operating facilities at Ormiston Hospital (East Auckland) and Quay Park Surgical Centre (Auckland Central). Surgery under general anaesthetic may be covered under health insurance policies with surgical cover included, please check with your provider.
